There are multiple surveys and focus groups used to assess climate. HERI for example.

Our finding related to the needs of commuter students shifted our support of students less frequently engaged in campus activities. The result was the creation of a commuter center. We also examined the continuation rates of second-year students. The result was the creation of a mandatory second year in the residence halls. The programming in the residence halls responds directly to the academic, social and professional needs of second-year students.
