A brief description of the institution’s main campus and other aspects of the institutional boundary used to complete this report:
The San Diego State University main campus is located in East San Diego on Montezuma Mesa since 1931 and covers 283 acres. The University also offers classes at the Imperial Valley Campus in Calexico and a satellite facility in Brawley. SDSU enrolls over 35,000 undergraduate and graduate students. SDSU and University auxiliaries facilities: Associated Students, Aztec Shops, The Campanile Foundation, The SDSU Research Foundation, and KPBS radio station are included in our profile.
Facilities include a state-of-the-art library, student union, recital hall, performing arts theatres, student health center, modern recreation center, 12,000-seat sports and performance arena, and two University maintained astronomical observatories, a public broadcast radio and television station, and seismology and weather stations.
The SDSU Research Foundation owns or manages approximately 9000 acres of largely undeveloped land in San Diego and Riverside Counties as a part of the Research Field Stations Program. The stations are used for research and include: the Sky Oaks Field Station, 1,640 acres of high elevation redshank chaparral habitat in the Chihuahua Valley east of Temecula Valley; the Santa Margarita Ecological Reserve (SMER), a 4,464 acre reserve located along the upper Santa Margarita River inland from Camp Pendleton in San Diego and Riverside Counties; Fortuna Mountain, 231 acres close to the SDSU campus located within Mission Trails Regional Park; and the Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve, a 2,513-acre reserve which serves as an auxiliary field station for SDSU.
