A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
Sustainable Selkirk has a presence at student orientation events in September and January. Students are provided with information about sustainability programs on campus. Materials available include recycling and composting guidelines, facts about campus tap water, pamphlets on our Fair Trade Campus designation, sign up sheets for the Sustainability Club, tips on how to conserve energy, and information about the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Visible sustainability initiatives (ie water refill stations, bike racks, recycling bins) are noted within campus tours. Other departments are encouraged to identify how their own work contributes towards the SDGs.
At our September 2022 orientation, we lauched our Reusable To-Go Container program. Attending students received a container as their welcome gift and used it for their BBQ lunch. They then had this container to use throughout the school year. This program launch highlighted the college's committment to reducing our waste.
