The name and a brief description of each student group:
Sewanee has a plethora of groups focused on sustainability: Environmental Residents: Formed in the late 1990′s by environmentally-conscious students, the Environmental Resident program is a dorm-based student group where sustainability-minded students help to coordinate dorm recycling, dorm events, and various events across campus. EarthKeepers: EarthKeepers is a student run organization open to undergrads, SOT students, faculty, staff, and local community members interested in living in harmony with the earth and one another. The purpose of Earthkeepers is to gather people together in a common place to discuss and reflect upon the natural world and our place within it. Earthkeepers is completely ecumenical in nature and open to everyone interested in exploring the interface between nature and spirituality. We will use the work of luminaries such as Wendell Berry, Joanna Macy, and Thomas Merton to spark conversation and engage our own personal feelings. Earthkeepers is centered around biweekly dinner discussions, monthly outdoor encounters, and gardening and canning volunteer days at St. Mary’s. Coalition for Responsible Investment: Forming in Fall 2012, the Sewanee Coalition for Responsible Investment is a group of highly engaged and active students who are questioning the existing investment practices of the University’s endowment. Their ultimate goal is to divest from the fossil fuel industry as well as tobacco production, chemically-derived agriculture, and arms trading. PowerSave Campus Interns: Serving as a partnership between TVA and the Alliance to Save Energy, the PowerSave Interns are an active group of students interested in improving the energy efficiency of buildings as well as helping educate students on green careers and the community on energy efficiency.
