A brief description of how sustainability is included prominently in new student orientation :
As part of SRU's orientation activities, a flyer insert describing SRU's sustainability programs and resources is provided in the "Successful Learning: A Guide to First Year Studies (FYRST)" handbook provided to all incoming students, and includes information about:
- SRU sustainability programs; our climate commitment, and the Office of Sustainability vision and mission statements;
- sustainable internship opportunities and clubs;
- links to other online sustainability resources
- sustainability website (www.sru.edu/sustainability)
In 2018, a Green Fund Grant enabled the Office of Sustainability to provide all incoming residence hall students with a ChicoBag reusable shopping bag made from recycled single-use plastic water bottles. Accompanying the bag was an informational bookmark (created by an environmental education graduate assistant) explaining why eliminating the use of single-use thin-film grocery store bags is so important to the environment.
Sustainability is also promoted through events such as the September Clubs & Organizations Fair on the Quad, where student interns from the Sustainable Enterprise Accelerator staff a table and educate students about sustainability and the Triple Bottom Line.
The Director of Sustainability also provides a "Sustainability 101" presentation to all new incoming student interns at the Sustainability Enterprise Accelerator, and includes an update on SRU's progress in meeting our climate commitment goal of achieving carbon neutrality by the year 2037.
