Sustainability Week
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Sustainability Week is an event that targets both campus and online students, as well as the community. It features a variety of events, programs, and service projects to educate campus and global learners, faculty, and staff about environmental, social, and economic sustainability.
Below is the program of events for Sustainability Week:
Saturday, October 22, 2022 – Community Park Clean Up
- Come join the Chandler Center, the Environmental Club, and the Office of Sustainability to support our community’s beautification. Volunteers sought to go around the park and pick up any debris to make this space a better place. Gloves, trash bags, and any materials needed for the clean-up will be provided. If you need a ride, meet at the Belknap Parking lot at the vans and hop on a van for a ride.
Monday, October 24, 2022 – Green Talks with the Green Team
- Join the Green Team this month as they kick off the work week! Gather with faculty and staff to learn about and discuss all things green, from composting to climate change. Green Talks are a forum to address topics of interest focused on the university and beyond, and how we can create change locally, personally, and globally. For October, guest speaker Dr. Mike Weinstein, Director of the Office of Sustainability, will talk about SNHU’s renewed commitment to sustainability and opportunities for involvement.
Monday, October 24, 2022 – The Maker Space
- Spreading the message of sustainability – Poster Making Contest: prizes for all attendees, prizes for top three posters.
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 – Learn and Taste How Sustainability Snacking Can be Yummy and Good for the Environment
- Stop on by during this event to meet and learn about sustainable nutrition from SNHU’s nutritionist Chelsea Gordon. Bring your appetite! Tasting is highly encourage.
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 – How to Get Other People to Care: Stakeholder Engagement for Organizational Change
- Do you care passionately about sustainability, or another topic and others don’t seem to? This event is for you! Join and get engaged in conversations to learn how to get stakeholder engagement for organizational change with Crystal Johnson, Program Director from Greener U.
Tuesday, October 25, 2022 – Simply Sustainable: 10 Easy Steps You Can Do to Make the Environment a Better Place
- You care about the environment, and you want to do the “right thing.” You may be asking “what exactly what is the right thing to do?” The Office of Sustainability will be hosting this event to provide you with 10 simple actions you can do to have a positive impact on the environment.
Wednesday, October 26, 2022 – Lunch and Learn: Green Cleaning Tips at Home – You Can Be Clean and Go Green
- Slavitza Demaine is a manager in SNHU’s Custodial Services. She will be sharing sustainable green cleaning and green living tips you can do at home, as well sharing what is being done at SNHU with green cleaning.
Wednesday, October 26, 2022 – Trail Maintenance and Invasive Species Clean Up at the Arboretum
- This is a great opportunity to get physical, learn more about the Arboretum, and talk about your ideas for the expanded use of this area. The Office of Sustainability will be leading this important event and answering any questions you may have. Tools, gloves, and materials for the clean-up will be provided. Dress appropriately – closed toed shoes, warm layered clothes, hat if it’s cold out.
Thursday, October 27, 2022 – Lunch and Learn at the Mill Yard: Bringing Nature Home – Make Your Own Terrarium and Learn Simply Ways to Incorporate with Mental Wellness
- Bring your lunch and learn simple, yet highly effective techniques to destress, improve your focus, increase your immunity and overall sense of well-being. Mother Nature has come to the rescue!
Join Kelly Dwyer from Nature Education Opportunities for this interactive workshop as we explore quick and easy strategies to connect with nature on a daily basis-even inside your home or workspace.
During the workshop you will:
- Create an individual terrarium made from local natural materials such as moss, lichens, and ferns.
- Learn nature-themed deep breathing techniques and stretches for instant energy or calm.
- Explore easy 5 minute “Nature Break” ideas to engage with the natural world-right outside your door!
Kelly Dwyer, founder of Nature Education Opportunities, is an award-winning environmental educator and certified NH elementary teacher. She has been creating and delivering engaging programming for audiences of all ages for over 15 years. As a certified wellness coach, Kelly also brings a deep understanding of the numerous benefits of connecting with the natural world to reduce stress, improve health and embrace a more mindful approach to life and learning. All materials for this event will be provided.
Saturday, October 29, 2022 – Furniture Clean Out Sale SETA Annex Parking Lots
- Who doesn’t love shopping and good deals? This event is open to everyone – SNHU community and the public. There are several pods of miscellaneous office and university furniture, cases of brand new locks and lock materials and items to be discovered! Prices range from $10 - $50. Come and check out what is for sale!
