Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Climate Action Fund
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2015, SOU created a Climate Action Fund (CAF) to support campus projects that reduce the university carbon footprint. The Climate Action Fund is financed by a 1% fee on all university-funded air travel, to be paid from the general fund. Additionally, incentives or rebates available for the conservation or renewable energy projects completed are deposited back into the CAF to continue supporting resource conservation and renewable energy on campus. By charging a fee to all university air travel, the university is able to lead the way in making funds available for projects to reduce the university’s carbon footprint and operational costs. Based on campus air travel records, it is estimated that the CAF will receive approximately $5,000 annually from the air travel fee, in addition to any rebates or incentives from completed projects.
