Waste reduction and recycling program

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
SOU's Waste Reduction and Reycling Program oeprates across campus for all employees. For waste reduction, employees are encouraged to remove personal/individual trash cans from their offices as studies have shown this increases recycling, reduces trash and allows custodians to spend time on other parts of the building. Trashing the trash cans was published in February 2020 https://sustainability.sou.edu/trashing-the-trash-cans/ and Facilities Management and Planning and Human resources both reduced the number of individual trash cans. Close monitoring was taking place for each building to gether data until COVID-19 meant that remote working was put in place. Both Human Resources and Facilities management and Planning contniue to have reduced individual trash cans. Once waste is reduced through various measure such as removal of trash cans, the recycling program kicks in. Signage and recycling containers have been updated in buildings across campus. Articles on recycling have also been sent out across campus along with social media. More focused guidance has been sent to Custodial and Facilities staff so that as much waste as possible is diverted from landfill. This includes education for biomass and metal recycling. Signage at the recycling center and waste management area has increased.
