The Diversity Enrichment Committee (DEC) promotes a diverse student, staff, and faculty body and an inclusive environment that is equally welcoming to all. The committee is composed of faculty, staff, and students. All of the major branches of the university (Provost’s Office, Student Life, Enrollment Management, etc) are represented on the DEC. Subcommittees of the DEC include: Communication, Institutional Culture, Curricular Enhancement, Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention, Institutional Partnerships and the Social Justice Programming Committee.

The Office of Diversity Education offers a variety of social justice and diversity workshops. These workshops include the following: Welcoming Workshop Stereotypes Workshop Diversity Circles Leadership Diversity Workshops. The Coalition for Diversity and Social Justice, The Office of Diversity Education and the Diversity Enrichment Committee also sponsor an Annual Diversity Training Retreat for students.

Here is Southwestern University's diversity statement as approved by the University Council in 2010: Southwestern was founded on the western frontier in the 19th Century as Texas’s first institution of higher education, and today is located in one of the country’s most racially, ethnically, and religiously diverse states. These circumstances necessitate a fundamental commitment to diversity. As stated in our catalog, “Southwestern originated in pioneering Texas and finds its identity in entering unfamiliar environments with confidence and vigor.
