Library support

Does the institution have ongoing library support for sustainability research and learning?:

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:
Greenley Library supports all student and faculty learning and research needs, including in the area of sustainability.

Subscriptions to major journal aggregator databases such as ScienceDirect, Ebsco Academic Search, and Proquest Research Library provide our users with a wide breadth of access to the periodical literature in the area of sustainability. Books are available in both print and electronic format, and librarians have recently instituted a liaison program with academic departments in order to better inform library purchases. The library also has an active interlibrary loan service that ensures that Farmingdale researchers have access to materials not already owned by the library. Our 2016 assessment of faculty satisfaction with the interlibrary loan service found overwhelming satisfaction with the ability of the Library to obtain research materials in a timely fashion.

The library also hired a scholarly communication librarian in 2018, to better address the needs of our faculty and student researchers. In Fall 2017 the library also launched a research poster printing lab, and has provided instruction to students and faculty on how to create and design posters for presentation at scholarly conferences.

Physical use of Greenley Library is very high, as a result of both increased enrollment and a major renovation that was completed in January 2015. A space satisfaction survey done in Spring of 2017 showed that students were satisfied with the physical spaces provided by the library. Increased demand for library hours has been met, with weekly hours incrementally increasing from 69 hours per week in 2013 to 86.25 hours per week as of 2017, and late night final exams hours were also added. The number of library instruction sessions, in the form of hour-long, in-class information literacy instruction by a librarian, reached an all-time high in Fall 2017, with a total of 96 sessions taught librarians at the request of faculty from 20 different academic programs.
