A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:
The Office of Diversity and Inclusion, at SUNY Oswego's mission is to foster an environment which respects, embraces and promotes cultural competence, civil discourse and active engagement in developing an inclusive and vibrant community of scholars who act as transformational agents of change and will become responsible citizens of the world.
SUNY Oswego convened a Diversity Advisory Board in 2008 which was charged with identifying and providing recommendations to the institution to address issues of equity. The committee membership included faculty from each academic division, students, facilities, alumni and development, University Police, International Education, and Student Affairs. The committee identified four major areas that need to be addressed: recruitment and retention of underrepresented students, faculty and professional staff; curriculum; assessment; and professional development. The committee also recommended that each division of the college should develop a diversity committee to address the equity issues specific to their disciplines/areas.
Each of school within the institution (SOB, CLAS, SCMA, and SOE) has a standing Diversity Equity and Inclusion Committee comprised of faculty, staff, and students.
In addition, diversity, equity, and inclusion are central operative values in SUNY Oswego's strategic Institutional Plan (Tomorrow: Greater Impact and Success)
