The use of inorganic fertilizers and chemical pesticides, fungicides and herbicides are prohibited on all areas of campus, with the exception of a small area near the Physical Education building with ornamental plants. If outside contractors are called for spraying or other controls, we validate that they use minimum amounts of and only low-risk chemicals. Reports and/or sightings of weeds and pests are assessed as to accuracy, amount, and pervasiveness. Any spraying done is minimized - that is, it is controlled and targeted only to affected areas.

Our Grounds department only plants native species, specific to our region and based of the DEC NYS Planting Guide. Invasive species removal occurs sparingly and often combined with curriculum in our Environmental Studies Department to give students a hands-on approach.

An irrigation system is in place only in lawn areas on the main plaza and garden/landscape areas beautifying academic buildings. The irrigation system is only used as necessary, specifically during drought-like conditions and are set to timers that are controlled remotely via computer/monitoring system.
A brief description of the institution's approach to materials management and waste minimization (e.g. composting and/or mulching on-site waste):
Landscape waste is processed both on and off campus for later use as compost. Our on-site mechanical composter, utilizes woodchips as the carbon source. The woodchips are processed on-site, from a rental landscape business, that mulches any of our fallen trees or limbs that are necessary for removal.

The Facilities Department staff is responsible for and performs the snow removal on campus to make certain that the access roadways, parking lots and sidewalks are ready for vehicular and pedestrian flow with safety as a priority. The de-icing agents are used only when necessary and are environmentally preferred and can be found via NYS Contract with the Office of General Services. However, prior to utilizing any ice melt, snow and ice is to be removed using ice choppers and shovels.
