Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
ESF's 2023 STARS report made every attempt to use 2022 data for each credit to the greatest extent possible. However due to factors described below, this credit area features data submitted for the College's 2021 report.
The COVID-19 pandemic impacted the ability of ESF students, faculty and staff to perform community service in a robust, trackable and continuous manner during 2020, 2021 and portions of 2022. The Division of Student Affairs manages and tracks student-facing community service. Extraordinary staffing circumstances during 2022, paired with the COVID-19 pandemic, impacted the Division's ability to manage community service programs in a manner consistent with past practice. The Division has since restructured and is poised to implement an improved tracking system at the beginning of the Spring 2023 semester.
Despite staffing challenges, the Division launched a new campus engagement and tracking solution (Campus Labs, also known as ESF Engage). This platform will aid the Division in tracking and monitoring student service hours moving forward. The Mighty Oak Student Assembly (MOSA) will soon make use of the platform and monitoring a requirement for all club activities.
During the Fall of 2022, a new staff position was created and filled (Coordinator of Leadership Development and Student Organizations). This position is fully dedicated to fostering student leadership and engagement on campus and beyond.
During January 2023, the Division participated in the Hardy L. Shirley Faculty Mentoring Colloquium. The 2023 Faculty Mentoring Colloquium focused on supporting student academic engagement and included a session entitled "Working with Community Partners". Faculty and staff will work together to improve opportunities for service-learning into coursework (including monitoring the number of hours dedicated to service).
The Spring 2023 semester will see a return to normalcy in ESF service culture. Programs including the Saturday of Service and alternative spring break will be offered once again.
