In 2022, the Director of Sustainable Operations worked extensively with Office of Sustainable Facilities and Operations project management staff to revise boilerplate Division 1 - General Requirements language to include C&D diversion goals, expectations and a tracking template. Construction projects wishing to move forward on campus must abide by these General Requirements. Project managers have started to emphasis C&D diversion expectations during project kickoff meetings. C&D diversion tracking templates are required to be completed by contractors and/or project managers for each project and are submitted to the Director of Sustainable Operations for review. These tracking documents inform the comprehensive annual zero waste tracking document linked below.
All projects are not presently being tracked in this ideal manner, but the Director of Sustainable Operations will continue to work with Office of Sustainable Facilities & Operations staff to improve the process and compliance rate over time. As new staff members join the team, they will receive training regarding C&D diversion expectations and assistance available to them from the Office of Sustainability.
The vast majority of the C&D included within this 2023 report is attributable to one project -- Marshall Hall. This academic building is undergoing a years long complete renovation, with the goal being to achieve LEED Gold (BD+C). This project's high diversion rate accounts for the success seen in C&D diversion this year.
