A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
Swarthmore College as the host of the Scott Arboretum has a great interest in storm water control. The campus includes one of the last vestiges of natural woodlands in Delaware County, PA bisected by the Crum Creek where virtually all surface run-off accumulates. Slowing the rate of discharge not only limits erosion but aids in limiting flooding downstream of the campus. The college has it's own Crum Woods Committee and is also active with the Chester-Ridley-Crum Watersheds Asssociation http://crcwatersheds.org/crum/programs

The College has been a local leader in establishing that green roof technology was viable. We have three green roof areas with a fourth planned.

Underground. As part of the science center construction an underground vault was constructed to hold the water run-off from the roofs. The water in turn is used to irrigate the garden beds around the science center.

Open areas abutting the Science Center parking lot were provided with vegetated swales to allow the runoff from the lot to accumulate and percolate down through the soil.

When Athletics opted for an artificial turf field the College
provided a drain field under it sufficient to retain a five year storm.
We also experiment with different methods to slow and absorb rather than guide and dispose of rain water run-off/
