PAE-1: Sustainability Coordination

The purpose of the Sustainability Committee of Swarthmore College is to make recommendations to the President and to the College community regarding policies to promote environmental sustainability on campus. The focus of the Committee's work is to identify policies that promote the most efficient use of College resources, to coordinate and consolidate sustainability efforts on campus, and to focus attention on the Lang Center as the vehicle for sustainability education and communication. Wherever possible, the "SusCom" develops recommendations that can be implemented under current budget constraints by focusing on best practices and increased efficiency. Longer-term or more costly initiatives are evaluated by the committee in the context of long-range campus planning. In 2011 the Sustainability Committee engaged in the search for a Sustainability Coordinator; gave input into the College's Strategic Plan; created subcommittees to work on curriculum, the Greenbox, the Renewing Fund, outreach, fundraising, and STARS.

The "office" is located in the Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility. Staff include the Sustainability Coordinator and four interns who work 5 hours a week each.

The Sustainability Coordinator works to coordinate, promote, and develop sustainability initiatives at Swarthmore. Her duties include Working with SusCom to develop recommendations Working with CAPCom to develop the Climate Action Plan Updating the Greenhouse Gas Inventory Maintain the sustainability website Create outreach materials and keep the community informed of sustainability events Be a contact person for people outside the college who are interested in learning about sustainability at Swarthmore Develop new sustainability initiatives Research best practices and network with other isntitutions Increase awareness, education, and behavior change Manage current sustainability programs Support the integration of sustainability into academics

The Sustainability Coordinator position lasted only for 10 months and was discontinued in July 2012.
