A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
President's Sustainability Research Fellow Jorge Lopez-Nava worked with Professor Carr Everbach to review two definitions, one for sustainability-focused courses and one for sustainability-inclusive courses. Jorge then used those definitions to go through the 2020-2021, 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 Swarthmore course catalogs to designate courses under these two definitions. This was sorted by department and put into a comprehensive spreadsheet, before being reviewed and summed by representatives from the Office of Sustainability and Carr Everbach.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
Each course was counted as a single course regardless of the number of offerings or sections
A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
A course with multiple offerings was only counted once per semester it was offered.

Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
There are only 36 academic departments from which courses were counted. Although Athletics is considered a department (explaining why 37 departments are counted in IC 3) by the Registrar’s Office, courses offered by Athletics were not considered in our count of courses that were sustainability focused or contained topics concerning sustainability.
