RecycleMania
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged:
The university participated in the national RecycleMania challenge in FY19, with a goal of recycling at least 350,000 pounds during the eight week period. Temple competed in the electronics waste recycling category, Per Capita Classic, Grand Champion, Organics, and the Waste Minimization categories. During the competition, Temple partnered with academic classes to promote recycling on campus, utilizing social media, building on athletics' social capital and planning outreach events and faculty, such as tours to recycling facilities and speaker series.
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
Giveaways -
150+ students received water bottles and were briefed on Temple's recycling program, sustainability issues and reuse opportunities on campus;
200+ students received traveler hot beverage mugs and were briefed Aramark and Temple Dining's waste minimization and sustainability program, and incentive discount opportunities on campus;
100+ signed the plastic free pledge during these giveaway tabling sessions
Trainings -
30 student leaders (registered student organization executive board members) were trained in hosting a Zero Waste Event;
50 students participated in gamified education on Waste Minimization and Temple's recycling program, getting real time instruction and feedback on sorting waste; water bottles were also distributed as well as information about upcoming events and other programming;
20 students learned of an Office of Sustainabilty Green Grant-funded, student-led compost collection service project and were given information about how to get involved in a waste minimization effort featuring community engagement, service and student leadership development
Other events:
60 students participated in activity-based waste minimization practice; about 60 pounds of waste diverted from the landfill via surplus office supplies being transformed into valentines and making reusable bags from donated excess t-shirts; fellowship amongst Green Council student orgs and other active student volunteers and alumni

2nd Campaign
Temple University Commuter Challenge
A brief description of the campaign, including how students and/or employees were engaged (2nd campaign):
The National Bike Challenge is a friendly competition among bicycle riders nationally and in the City of Philadelphia. Riders participate within the network of their workplace, which includes businesses, universities, and other organizations and networks. Within these workplaces, riders join a team and log their bicycle miles after their cycling rides. Temple organizes a team of students, staff and faculty to compete against its rivals. The goal of the campaign is to promote bike ridership through competition. We participate through a local environmental nonproftit, Clean Air Council, who hosts the competition in the Delaware Valley Region twice a year in both May and "Cycle" September
A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign (2nd campaign):
Temple University won for the City of Philadelphia in Fall of 2018 engaging over 50 riders.The university also participated in the Clean Air Council's National Bike Challenge in the month of May, earning second place.
