A brief description of the event(s):
This is the 12th year of Texas A&M University’s nationally-recognized Ecological Integration Symposium. It features cutting-edge scientists who are at the forefront of ecological research, attracting faculty, students, NGOs, government agencies and the public. The goal of this year’s theme was to investigate natural and human caused ecological disturbances over different scales of time and space. Various perspectives, from scientists to policy makers were incorporated in the discussion of what influences ecological recovery after a disturbance event.
On February 1st - 2nd, 2011 the Texas A&M Energy and Engineering Institute hosted Energy Forum 2011: Energy Security and Sustainability: Global Challenges. This forum featured speakers from all aspects of the Energy field including: environmental politicians, oil executives, and speakers looking at clean renewable energy sources.
Texas A&M University hosted its fourth annual Campus Sustainability Day on October 26th, 2011. Sustainability Day features more than 20 organizations that represent student groups, community partners and a variety of Texas A&M departments that have implemented sustainable initiatives. Activities occurring throughout the day include “truth” displays, recycled art, signing up students for the Office of Sustainability's Sustainability Pledge, and an information exchange.
The Environmental Issues Committee, The College of Education and Human Development, and The Office of Sustainability partner each year to host Texas A&M Earth Day in April. In 2011, campus and community environmental organizations hosted more than 20 tables, free food and beverages were given out, free bike engraving was offered by the University Police Department, and the third annual Trashion Show put on by Bryan Collegiate High School took place. We expect the event to be bigger than ever in 2012, as Earth Day will be hosted at the Memorial Student Center the same week of its re-opening.
The Glasscock Center for Humanities Research annually offers programs--course grants, lectures, roundtables--supported by the Mary Jane and Carrol O. Buttrill '38 Endowed Fund for Ethics. The Center's theme for these lectures and roundtables for 2010-2012 is "Sustenance."
