A brief description of how the institution ensures that its lowest-paid workers (including contractors, if applicable) receive sustainable compensation:
Note: The total number of employees includes budgeted faculty and staff as well as temporary wage employees. Human Resources does not track the number of individual contractors that may be working on campus. Texas A&M University strives to ensure that employees receive sustainable compensation through compensation administration and actions taken to demonstrate support of its lowest-paid employees. 1. All requests for newly-created and reclassified staff positions are reviewed in Human Resources for appropriate compensation levels compared with the local or relevant market. 2. The minimum pay rates for titles in the Classified Personnel Pay Plan have been reviewed for comparability with relevant markets for 5 of the last 7 fiscal years, with titles receiving increases to minimum rates in all 5 years. 3. Based on the research and recommendations of a Wage & Benefits Task Force appointed by University President Robert Gates in 2005, the lowest pay rate on campus was increased from $6.15 per hour to $7.77 per hour. 4. The current lowest minimum hourly rate for Classified Pay Plan positions is $8.58, a 39% increase since 2005. This rate is also 18% above the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. The minimum rates of entry-level Classified positions on campus have consistently shown to surpass the local market for comparable jobs. 5. Texas A&M University provides a benefits package to budgeted employees that includes at least 30% additional value in indirect compensation. 6. In addition, Texas A&M implemented mandatory pay increases for our lowest-paid workers in 2008 ($.21 per hour increase for employees earning $16.12 per hour or less) and in 2010 ($.29 per hour increase for employees earning $11.97 per hour or less). A mandatory pay increase is planned for September 2011 of $.29 per hour increase for employees earning $16.53 per hour or less. These mandatory increases further demonstrate commitment to sustainable compensation.
