Environmental Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:
The B.S. in Environmental Studies (ENST) offers an extensive suite of policy courses which will enable you to understand the public policy debates surrounding environmental issues and ultimately participate in the formulation of policy. It integrates courses from the college’s four departments – Atmospheric Sciences, Geography, Geology and Geophysics, and Oceanography – to give you the solid foundation in Earth system sciences needed to effectively participate in and affect those debates. ENST majors will select an area of specialization from Urban Environments, Geographic Information Science and Technology, Environmental Regulation and Compliance, Occupational Health and Safety, or Global Environment.

Renewable Natural Resources

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (2nd program):
Renewable Natural Resources (RENR) is for students desiring a rigorous education in the study and management of sustainable ecosystems for a wide variety of resource values. The RENR program of study is comprised of a core of courses and an emphasis area. The goal of this core/emphasis structure is to provide students with an identity as a renewable natural resources specialist, while, at the same time, affording the flexibility for preparation for a variety of career tracks. Technical electives prepare the students in chosen educational and career directions. The underlying goal of the RENR degree is to integrate the scientific issues of renewable natural resources. Graduates of this program will be able to articulate these issues verbally and in writing in their chosen career. Therefore, the RENR degree emphasizes verbal presentations and major papers as well as field-oriented activities.

The RENR programs are designed to help students prepare for careers in public and private organizations associated with the planning and use of natural resources and the environment. Possible employment includes areas such as multi-use land management, environmental assessment, resource inventory, natural resource planning, law, policy analysis and land remediation.

Environmental Geosciences

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program (3rd program):
The B.S. in Environmental Geosciences is an interdisciplinary geosciences degree with course content drawn from meteorology, geology, oceanography, and physical geography. The undergraduate major in Environmental Geosciences requires extensive preparation in science (Biology, Chemistry, and Physics) and math (Calculus and Statistics). This major prepares you for careers involving fieldwork and lab work. In the junior and senior year, Environmental Geosciences majors select a theme specialization from Biosphere, Climate Change, Coastal and Marine Environments, Human Impact on the Environment, or Water.

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:
The Minor in Sustainable Architecture and Planning provides undergraduate students with a multidisciplinary approach to understanding sustainability of the built environment. The curriculum emphasizes an awareness of responsible practices at a variety of scales impacting the built environment: buildings, communities, architectural systems, global resource management, and social equity. Students will become aware of responsible architectural design and develop critical thinking skills to address the multifaceted issues facing the profession today.
