Tufts maintains MassDEP minor source air permits on each campus. These permits require annual compliance reporting called source registration. The source registration report reports fuel usage on each campus and converts fuel usage to emissions factors.

A brief description of the institution’s initiatives to minimize air pollutant emissions from stationary sources, including efforts made during the previous three years:
Tufts is planning a new central energy plant to replace a plant built in 1955. The new plant is expected to lower Tufts' air pollution.
Tufts has reduced the use of fuel oil by switching to natural gas where possible. 40,000 gallons of oil capacity have been permanently removed.
