A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
A representative from the Office of Sustainability makes a 20 minute presentation at every new staff orientation. This is a 5 minute presentation at new faculty orientation. The presentation covers the following topics: the role of the Office of Sustainability, common definition of sustainability, Tufts institutional commitment to sustainability, a few new construction projects that represent this, sustainable transportation, how to recycle properly at Tufts, specialty recycling, becoming and Eco-Ambassador, Green Office Certification, CSA share on campus, and our website and contact info. All new staff get either a "Sustainable Commuting" brochure (for our two Boston campuses) or an Eco-Map for our Medford/Somerville campus in their new employee orientation folders, in addition to the presentation. The Eco-Map contains information about recycling and composting, sustainable food at Tufts, commuter benefits, car and bike share, public transit, campus shuttles and a map of Eco-locations (compost bins, water refill stations, specialty recycling, etc.). This brochure is in all packets at new Faculty orientation as well and for faculty who do not attend orientation, they are emailed the electronic version. All of the benefits for Tufts employees are listed online, limiting the amount of paper that Human Resources needs to provide to new employees. Sometimes there are orientations on our small Grafton campus and a Sustainability representative is not present. However, the Grafton orientation leader includes a few slides on Sustainability from the orientation deck in the Grafton campus's orientation. There is a 3 part video series called "Guide to Being Green at Tufts" that goes over the history of sustainability initiatives at Tufts on the online learning center. There is also a "How to Recycle at Tufts video" in there: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp9Zh-2yMKM This is an optional module for new staff and the Guide to Being Green videos got 341 views between fall 2016 - fall 2018. The Office of Sustainability will be updating the content in 2019.
