A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
The most methodological way to complete this credit is to make a list of the departments and schools that were offering sustainability-focused or sustainability-related courses. Our Research Intern tracked the researchers, sorted by which UN Sustainability Goal their research falls under. She methodologically went through each of those departmental websites searching for faculty doing sustainability research. She did not count researchers who are emeritus professors, graduate students, or whose bio suggests that they are not currently involved in research.
She also sent the Office of the Vice Provost of Research (OVPR) an email. They keep a database of current research being done at Tufts, but only send a subset of that database based on keywords. The intern obtained a list of all research being done that includes the word “sustainability” in the description.
After she determined which researchers might fall under which goals, she sent an email, attaching the spreadsheet, to all of the researchers on the list, then made a note on the spreadsheet if they have verified their listing or not.
Sustainability staff later emailed the OVPR to find that in FY21 Tufts had 498 active PIs from 86 unique departments, Schools, and or Centers. We are not certain that all of these researchers were faculty. It is possible that some were post docs or other staff.
