The UDEM’s solid waste is classified in:
1.Paper (blue)
2.PET bottles and aluminum cans (yellow)
3.“Other stuff” (grey).
This classification is derived from a study made by the UDEM Center for Sustainability in April 2011 and previous university experiences. The key for the functionality of this classification is that it takes in considerations scientific, operative and socio-cultural aspects.
The “other stuff” containers may contain recyclable and non-recyclable materials. For the recovery of the recyclable material, the cleaning staff carries out a second separation. This second separation makes possible the recovery of glass, polypropylene and other materials presented in smaller quantity than PET, aluminum and paper.
