Air & Climate

Over the past three years, students and faculty have been utilizing campus energy data to estimate GHG. One example is a group of students who made the carbon footprint of the building as their graduation project that hosts two schools inside the campus. We had had students analyze alternatives to reduce the emissions from scope 2 through the implementation of solar panels.

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Buildings:
Students from the undergraduate program in energy utilize the buildings on campus as their research projects. The idea is for students to implement the concepts learned in class in an actual situation. Specifically, students from the course on energy efficiency try to identify strategies that could help reduce energy consumption on campus.

Students from the undergraduate in energy focus their semester projects on energy management on campus. Students are free to select any area in the institution to identify energy consumptions and define strategies to reduce it. Often the energy projects are connected to air and climate.

Food & Dining 

Is the institution utilizing its infrastructure and operations as a living laboratory for applied student learning for sustainability in relation to Food & Dining?:
Yes

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Food & Dining:
Students from the undergraduate nutrition program analyzed the options offered at the dining halls and proposed changes in the menu to offer students low-impact alternatives. They also considered food allergies as part of the options.

Grounds

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Grounds:
A class from the civil undergraduate program have to register all trees in the online platform (http://bosqueurbanomexico.org/). Students have to go through campus identifying and photographing the trees. The next step will be to create ID tags for each tree.

There have been student initiatives to assess the benefits of a new green area in the institution. A group of students compared the impacts of having a parking lot and the benefits of turning it into a green space. This initiative validated and assessed one big project the institution completed when building the Solar.

Transportation 

Is the institution utilizing its infrastructure and operations as a living laboratory for applied student learning for sustainability in relation to Transportation?:
Yes

A brief description of the projects and how they contribute to understanding or advancing sustainability in relation to Transportation:
Transportation is a big issue in our city; many of our students drive because of the lack of good public and efficient transportation. Students from the Sustainability Undergraduate Program analyzed the situation and proposed a more sustainable means of transportation for students, staff, and faculty. The mobility office partners with academic courses to assess the impacts of their programs. One project from an academic study was to estimate the efficiency of the mass transportation option offered by UDEM. The results were enlightening, bringing ideas and strategies to reduce fuel consumption while moving the same number of people.

Waste

As part of the academic courses on sustainable projects, students analyze the waste management program at UDEM. Strategies not only focus on sorting waste but also on reducing consumption. We have had proposals to include organic waste bins and also composting on site.
