A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation (including how multiple dimensions of sustainability are addressed):
As part of a welcome session, all new employees are convened to a presentation called Découverte de l’UdeS (or discover Université de Sherbrooke), session which occurs every three weeks. New employees get to be informed on the various aspects of the institution, may they be related to the services available, on projects and initiatives, etc. that take place on the University’s campuses. It is in that context that new employees are presented with the various initiatives and actions related to sustainability and sustainable development, and the University’s commitment to sustainable development. Here are some of the topics and initiatives raised to that regard: - The Environment and Sustainable Development University Training Center (Centre universitaire de formation en environnement et développement durable (CUFE)) – its mission, etc.; - Sustainable development action plan - recycling, composting, integration of sustainability and sustainable development concepts into educational activities, events, initiatives, etc.; - Responsible purchasing - policies, purchasing guidelines, etc.; - Sustainable transportation - many facilitating measures and incentives (i.e. public transportation program, carpooling program with a guaranteed return system, long-distance intercity transport between campuses (Sherbrooke-Longueuil (no charge), campus shuttle-(Main-Health campuses); - Free-of-charge bicycles, bicycle paths, etc.; - Electric charging stations for electric vehicles; - Sports facility – access and services, etc.; - University Cultural Center – special rates, shows, theatre performances, art gallery, etc. In addition, a Découverte de l’UdeS guide is provided to all new employees upon hiring. This guide contains several sections that cover topics such as the organizational structure of the University, the work environment, etc. This guide also contains a section on the institution's policies, such as the one pertaining to equal opportunities for women, to fundamental rights of individuals and prevention of all forms of harassment and discrimination, just to name those.
