A brief description of the institution’s green event certification program, including the specific components selected above:
In 2011, Université de Sherbrooke became the first Québec university to receive the 9700-253 certification from the Bureau de normalization du Québec (BNQ) for the organization of eco-friendly events. This certification evaluates the University according to specific criteria, classified in the following 5 categories: 1. Service providers selection This category is meant to favor the service providers located near the events so that these generate local benefits. In addition, values in sustainable development as well as the social consideration of the service providers are taken into account. 2. Equipment, energy sources and water management The 4 Rs (rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle) are assessed in this category. To evaluate them, equipment characteristics, energy and water consumption as well as on-site energy sources are analyzed. 3. Residual materials management This category assesses the events capacity not to generate large quantities of residual materials. To do this, a food surplus and residual materials management system evaluations are carried out. 4. Food selection Here, the certification aims to promote local products purchasing and selling, acknowledged or certified as organic and / or as fair trade during events. 5. Means of transportation selection This category aims to evaluate the means put in place to reduce GHG emissions generated by events and the use of public transportation. To achieve this, organization, participants and users trips are taken into account. Based on the events, a rating between 1 and 5 is then assigned, which specifies their eco-friendly level. Over the years, there have been many events organized at the Université de Sherbrooke taking into account the BNQ certification: conventions, back-to-school activities, convocation ceremonies, just to name a few. The University BNQ certification is still valid to date.
