Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Hoola One Plastic Vaccum Cleaner
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In 2017, Université de Sherbrooke’s mechanical engineering students developed, as part of their design project for the last two years of their degree, an automated machine, the Hoola One Plastic Vaccum Cleaner, in order to collect small residues such as microplastics that accumulate on beaches. In fact, the Hoola One prototype was tested on Kamilo Beach in Hawaii with the goal of restoring the existing ecosystem. This student initiative won, in 2019, first place in the "global social innovation challenge". This international competition, which was held at the University of San Diego as part of the Global Social Innovation Challenge 2019 (GSIC), is meant to reward students who are developing social enterprises focused on sustainable change. Hoola One also won the Petri Design Award for the 34th Canadian Engineering Competition in 2019. This award recognizes the exceptional and innovative technical design of the project.
The Université de Sherbrooke was participating for the first time in an international competition in the field of social innovation, and won. The student benefited in this venture from the guidance of the Université de Sherbrooke's Vice-President Office, Partnerships and Knowledge Transfer.
