Sustainable development is an integral part of the day-to-day building space management overseen by the Facilities Department. Whether designing a new building according to LEED principles or renovating outdated systems to save energy and reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs), the Facilities Department ensures that sustainable development principles are integrated at all stages of its projects, in accordance with the University’s Building Standards.

The Facilities Department contributes to the Université de Sherbrooke's mission by ensuring that the learning, research, work, accommodation and leisure environments are in keeping with the needs of the university community, are safe and respectful of environmental standards and the Sustainable Development Policy.
In order to minimize the negative impact of its activities on the environment, whether through reductions in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, better water management or more responsible procurement, the University is increasingly integrating the principles of sustainable development into its construction and renovation projects.
This integration is particularly evident in some more recent construction projects:
• Humanities and Social Sciences Research Pavilion;
• Longueuil Campus building;
• Integrated Research Laboratory;
• Life Sciences Pavilion.

Impacts on the surrounding site: The Université de Sherbrooke is recognized for its green campuses that offer a healthy environment, pleasant and motivating, conducive to training and work. Several projects or initiatives of the university community emerged in recent years helping to enrich the quality of the environment on the three campuses. The Green Space Development Strategy 2018-2022 (Stratégie d’aménagement des espaces verts 2018-2022) aims to build a positive impact on the surrounding sites especially with better planning and water preservation, on the ecosystem and biodiversity, and contributing in the building of a community.

Energy consumption: The University’s energy efficiency program aims to comply with the Energy and Greenhouse Gas Management Strategy 2018-2022 (Stratégie de gestion de l’énergie et des gaz à effet de serre 2018-2022) which requires improving energy efficiency for construction projects by surpassing the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings 2015 (NECB) by 25%.

Building-level energy metering: The University’s Building Standards stipulate that any new construction or renovation must comply with the latest edition of the energy saving’s regulation in new buildings and the standard required meters connected to the University’s control system.

Usage of environmentally preferable materials: The University’s Building Standards include requirements on various green building materials including eco-friendly paint and preferably the use of concrete and wood over steel.

Indoor environmental quality: The Régie du bâtiment du Québec (RBQ) and the Construction Codes require minimum ventilation rates and other measures for new and existing buildings, intended to provide indoor air quality that is acceptable to human occupants and that minimizes adverse health effects.

Water consumption: Recognizing the importance of integrated water resources management, the University implemented numerous measures in 2000 to protect and develop this resource.
The University’s Water Management Plan includes:
• Installation of low flow devices with motion detectors on the main Campus;
• Equipment using continuous water supply is gradually phased out;
• No outside watering, except in exceptional cases;
• End of the use of drinking water for vacuum pumps at science research laboratories;
• Transfer of the cooling system from the cold rooms to the closed loop of cooled water;
• Installation of a water line in the tunnel to avoid the use of a problematic underground section;
• Reduction of steam consumption; this allows a make-up water consumption reduction.

Building-level water metering: Water meters identify leaks and reduce water consumption on campus. Since 2000, the University has put in place measures to ensure sound water management, supported by water meters, particularly at the main campus.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
The Facilities Department is divided into two branches: Operations and Planning and Property Development.
The Operations branch's mandate is to maintain fixed assets on a daily basis and to keep them in good condition. It oversees energy distribution, it ensures buildings safety, it maintains the main electrical, cooled water, steam and road networks. The branch is also responsible for environmental safety.
The Planning and Property Development branch is responsible for construction, conversion and renovation projects management.

Construction guidelines are prioritized in the operations and maintenance activities of the University. In order to ensure compliance, collaboration with the relevant parties involved is central. The 2018-2022 Sustainable Development Plan and various strategies ensure that an audit is completed to confirm that these guidelines are followed and updated when necessary.
