A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
SUSTAINABILITY COURSES CONSIDERED
For the methodology for the selection of courses directly or indirectly related to ecoresponsibility, we started from the list of courses taught by professors who are members of the Institute of Environmental Sciences (ISE), which constituted a good starting point for starting a review. To that base of courses related to eco-responsibility, we analyse each course description on the following criteria :
For "focused" sustainability courses
- Foundational courses with a primary and explicit focus on sustainability (e.g., Introduction to
Sustainability, Sustainable Development, etc.).
- Courses with a primary and explicit focus on the application of sustainability within a field (e.g. Green Chemistry, Sustainable Business, etc.).
As sustainability is an interdisciplinary topic, such courses generally incorporate insights from
multiple disciplines.
- Courses with a primary and explicit focus on a major sustainability challenge (e.g., Climate
Change Science, Environmental Justice, Global Poverty and Development, Renewable Energy
Policy). The focus of such courses were considered.
For "indirect (inclusive)" sustainability courses
- Course integrating sustainability (aka “sustainability courses”)
These are the courses that are not explicitly focused on sustainability, but which can contribute to eco-responsibility and ecological transition.
- whose eco-responsibility has been clearly integrated into the course content and is found in the description or justification provided in the course inventory must indicate that the course includes a unit or module on sustainability or a sustainability challenge or includes one or more activities, or understands sustainability challenges, issues and concepts throughout the course including also the concepts found in the Sustainable Development Goals (see section list of words that helped identify these courses https://ecoresponsable.uqam.ca/champ).
ALL UNIVERSITY COURSES (DENOMINATOR)
The total number of courses was produced by our Bureau de la recherche institutionnelle [Office of Institutional Research]. This total number refers to those academic years : 2017-2018. Were counted each time a course is offered over that period as a separate course (non-distinct). The following courses were specifically targeted : workshops, technical courses, lectures (For all the courses taught between 2017 and 2020 at UQAM (total courses : denominator of the calculation), we count each time a course is offered as a separate course).
The sustainability courses offert were counted in the same way as the total course offerings. For example, a course that is held twice in the fall term and once in the spring term may be counted as 3 courses.)
Some courses have been excluded, in respect with the criteria of STARS, considering the lack of stability in content or the absence of specific topics (e.g. individually-directed courses like tutorials and directed readings). The internship courses was not included.
