Part 2. Reduction in source energy use per unit of floor area

Baseline year energy consumption

STARS 2.2 requires electricity data in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If a baseline has already been established in a previous version of STARS and the institution wishes to continue using it, the electricity data must be re-entered in kWh. To convert existing electricity figures from MMBtu to kWh, simply multiply by 293.07107 MMBtu/kWh.

Electricity use, baseline year (report kWh):
kWh MMBtu
Imported electricity 114,186,783 Kilowatt-hours 389,605.30 MMBtu
Electricity from on-site, non-combustion facilities/devices (e.g., renewable energy systems) 0 Kilowatt-hours 0 MMBtu

Stationary fuels and thermal energy, baseline year (report MMBtu):
MMBtu
Stationary fuels used on-site to generate electricity and/or thermal energy 111,395.98 MMBtu
Imported steam, hot water, and/or chilled water 0 MMBtu

Total site energy consumption, baseline year:
501,001.29 MMBtu

Baseline year building space

Gross floor area of building space, baseline year:
421,773 Gross square meters

Baseline period

Start and end dates of the baseline year (or 3-year period):
Start date End date
Baseline period May 1, 2012 April 30, 2013

A brief description of when and why the energy consumption baseline was adopted:
Institutional targets for reducing unit energy consumption compared to 2012-2013 to be reached by 2029-2030, i.e. -15% reduction.

This is the baseline from the provincial goverment : https://transitionenergetique.gouv.qc.ca/affaires/secteurs/secteur-institutionnel/cibles-de-reduction-institutionnelles

Source energy

Source-site ratio for imported electricity:
2

Total energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Site energy Source energy
Performance year 1.06 MMBtu per square meter 1.90 MMBtu per square meter
Baseline year 1.19 MMBtu per square meter 2.11 MMBtu per square meter

Metric used in scoring for Part 2

Percentage reduction in total source energy consumption per unit of floor area from baseline:
10.11

A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
All University light switches have signage stickers inviting the community to turn off the lights.

The efforts made since the implementation (modernization of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment as well as the control systems) of the UQAM Energy Efficiency Program in 2006 have made it possible to reduce annual GHG emissions by 35%.

A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
90 photovoltaic solar panels have been installed on the Coeur des sciences building and operate all year round, even in winter. Three other installations can be found on the mechanical lean-to on the roof of the second floor of the Science Library, on the south-west facing part. Three different technologies have been installed, two of these three solar walls recover thermal energy only, while the third combines photovoltaic and thermal technologies (https://www.actualites.uqam.ca/2019/des-panneaux-solaires-UQAM).
