A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
The University at Albany is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability. One of the key area where members of the University Community can have a positive impact in reducing pollution is in stormwater management.
Many of you may not be aware that on the University's Uptown Campus, the majority of our storm water catch basins, located on our roadways and parking lots, collect stormwater that ultimately ends up in Indian Pond. It is then pumped from Indian Lake and used to irrigate our athletic fields. When too much stormwater gets to Indian Pond, a spillway directs the overflow, via an underground culvert, to the Krumkill and ultimately to the Hudson River.

The university has porous paving in a few areas. Porous pavement has been implemented in a few of the loading dock areas at the residential areas, the replacement lot of the Service Building A renovation, and in walkways and paths at the new construction Liberty Terrace dormitory.

Indian Pond is a man-made pond used to retain rainwater which is then used in all irrigation on campus.

The university uses stone swales in a few areas, notably around our grounds building, the new construction dormitories, and one parking lot.

Vegetated swales are used around the "Purple Path" walkway around campus and used in stormwater detention areas.

There is signage at most storm drains that say the stormwater drains to waterways. Also, we have implemented a small rain garden on campus outside of the Alumni House. There are plans to put in rain gardens around the new dormitory on campus.
