A group of engineering students spent the spring semester designing infrastructure improvements at Saint Rita's Lane Bike Path around UB's North Campus. They considered cost, the environmental impact, social involvement, spacial planning and multi-purpose uses in their designs. Their final recommendation was to preserve the old bridge and create a multi-bike pathway with a seating in the middle of it.

Waste

Is the institution utilizing its campus as a living laboratory for multidisciplinary student learning and applied research in relation to Waste?:
Yes

A brief description of the student/faculty projects and how they contribute to understanding campus sustainability challenges or advancing sustainability on campus in relation to Waste:
Electrical engineering students designed a “smart” recycling tote that city of Buffalo officials lent to the class. Students attached to the underside of the lid electronics that monitor when the tote is full, its location and other information. The electronics then send that data over a wireless network to whomever is in charge of the totes. The technology could be used to improve the efficiency of recycling routes on campus. It also could alert officials that someone’s tote is full, thereby presenting an opportunity to pick up the recyclables a day or two early. http://www.buffalo.edu/sustainability/OurStrategy/news-and-events/latest-news.host.html/content/shared/www/sustainability/articles/news-articles/InternetofThings.detail.html

Water

Is the institution utilizing its campus as a living laboratory for multidisciplinary student learning and applied research in relation to Water?:
Yes

A brief description of the student/faculty projects and how they contribute to understanding campus sustainability challenges or advancing sustainability on campus in relation to Water:
In the spring and summer of 2018, 50 student volunteers from around campus and the community to help plant more than 200 trees and shrubs and about 260 perennials to stave off erosion, as well as 600 aquatic plants — all native to the area, along the bank of UB's Lake Lasalle. In addition to the trees and shrubs, volunteers installed a 50-foot-by-150-foot wildflower garden. The garden beckons a plethora of pollinators — from bees and birds, to butterflies — and a host of human visitors admiring the garden’s vibrant bounty of purple coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, elderberry and cardinal flower, among other native plants. http://www.buffalo.edu/sustainability/OurStrategy/news-and-events/latest-news.host.html/content/shared/www/sustainability/articles/news-articles/LakeLasalleSpringstoLife.detail.html
