Apply the planning process to the sustainable development of cities, suburbs, and rural areas. Develop environmental design solutions that restore natural resources; minimize the negative effects of human settlements on ecosystems; identify opportunities for landscape reclamation; and ethically mitigate the impact of environmental problems on human health and urban and regional systems.

Graduates of the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering MS program contribute to the solution of important environmental problems through careers in research, government, consulting and the private sector. Topics of current interest include the delivery of clean drinking water, treatment of air and wastewater pollutants, and the restoration of the Great Lakes and other aquatic ecosystems.

Environmental law plays a major role in structuring the relationship between human beings and the world around them. Almost every kind of legal practice today touches some aspect of environmental law.
Lawyers practice environmental law in large and small private law firms, in the offices of in-house corporate counsel, in trade associations, in federal, state and local government agencies, in the offices of state attorneys general and the U.S. Department of Justice, and in many non-governmental organizations. Whether future employment entails advocating the position of a public interest group, a corporate client, a government agency, or a private citizen, the Environmental Law LL.M. is designed to meet the need for knowledgeable and skillful application of legal principles and techniques to environmental and natural resource problems, including climate change.
The Environmental Law LL.M. offers students the opportunity to develop their skills and understanding of environmental law and policy through a structured program of study and experience.

One of the fundamental societal issues of the 21st century is understanding the environment, how human interactions affect it, and how those interactions can be modulated to generate sustainable outcomes. Fundamental environmental and sustainability issues, include the ecological and evolutionary processes that control populations, species and communities; anthropogenic effects on the physical, chemical and biotic environments; and the cultural values and societal actions necessary to foster sustainable interactions with the natural world. Addressing these issues requires a transdisciplinary approach that spans the natural sciences, social sciences and the humanities.
This advanced certificate consisting of 15 graduate credit hours serves as a locus for interactions among a diverse array of students and faculty throughout the university and initiate transdisciplinary scholarly activities. The curriculum consists of three courses: one environmental, one social, and one economic as well as two core courses in fundamentals of sustainability. Completion of this certificate apply directly to the MS in Social Sciences Interdisciplinary.
