UC Merced Vernal Pools and Grasslands Reserve and the Merced County UC Cooperative Extension Office and Upper Merced River Watershed Council have a California Naturalist Certification Program that is a 10-week training which combines science instruction with guest speakers, field trips, and project-based learning to explore the unique ecology and natural history of the San Joaquin Valley and central Sierra Nevada foothills region. The course covers basic ecology, watershed concepts, geology, wildlife, plant communities, and global environmental issues, as well as tools for collaborative conservation and communication.
UC Agriculture and Natural Resources has a Master Gardener program in Merced that trains and advises home gardeners on programs, pests and general plant and garden culture. Classes include information and training on Home Garden Water Management, Sustainable Landscaping, Composting and Vermiculture, as well as Soils and Fertilizers.
UC Extension offers courses that are also related to sustainability.
