We are currently using the LEED Green Building Operations and Maintenance rating system to certify our buildings for sustainable operations. We currently have three buildings certified, the UCM Leo and Dottie Kolligian Library and the Science and Engineering 1 building which are both certified Gold, and the UCM Classroom and Office Building certified Silver.

Cleaning and maintenance products contribute to indoor air quality problems, slip/fall hazards, and potential health hazards. This policy has been established to ensure appropriate actions are taking place to reduce the environmental impact of maintaining the property while still providing a safe and healthy working environment for its occupants. The intent is to reduce exposure of occupants and maintenance personnel to potentially hazardous chemicals, biological, particle contaminants and anything else that would adversely impact air quality, occupant health, building finishes, building systems, and the environment. University of California, Merced has formally adopted this policy to implement green housekeeping practices in the maintenance of its building. This policy applies to all employees and contractors working for the university.

A brief description of the energy management or benchmarking program:
UC Merced has been using whole-building energy performance targets since its founding and has had great success in delivering buildings with very energy efficient designs that perform to those design targets in their ongoing operations. The targets are expressed as a percent of a baseline and cover all critical design parameters including annual and peak electric and natural gas use, as well as peak chilled water loads (Brown 2002, Brown et al. 2010). The baselines reflect the 1999 benchmark energy performance of existing building stock for similar buildings, corrected for local climate. They were derived using a regression analysis of actual energy data collected in 1999 at several UC and California State University (CSU) campuses.
To track energy performance against these baselines, a campus wide building automated energy management system has been installed into all campus buildings and future buildings to track energy performance. This system captures and stores all energy consumption from various systems such as: Lighting, cooling, heating, plug loads, etc. We can then generate reports to give us the information we are looking for. We also use the automated system to re-commission our campus buildings.

UC Merced utilizes several water management and bench-marking systems to assess water usage and performance. The university utilizes BEACON Advance Metering Analytics and dashboard to assess water usage and consumption for all campus buildings, irrigation, and industrial uses. In addition, the campus created a real time water monitoring and tracking usage dashboard in 2015 to comply with state water reduction goals.

The GSF provided in this credit only takes into consideration buildings that are LEED certified based on LEED certification criteria. All LEED projects must be constructed and operated on a permanent location on existing land. No project that is designed to move at any point in its lifetime may pursue LEED certification. LEED Certification also does not allow for certification of temporary buildings per the minimum program requirements. The campus does include in its site boundary temporary buildings.
