Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Contactless Food Box Delivery Service
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
The Contactless Food Box Delivery Service is a program that delivers surplus food to ten Merced residents each week. The Contactless Food Box Delivery Service works with a local food pantry, Bread4Life, to deliver boxes of food. The Contactless Food Box Delivery Service is innovative because it reduces both food waste and food insecurity, which is especially needed during these unprecedented times of the pandemic. The Contactless Food Box Delivery Service is also innovative because as it simultaneously reduces food waste and food insecurity, it also works to improve the sustainability of UC Merced and the Merced community. This service is innovative because it provides an additional resource of food for food insecure UC Merced students. The Contactless Food Box Delivery Service is also an innovative program because it seeks to overcome a contributing factor of food security: transportation. This service is especially innovative because the great majority of food pantries and programs require guests to travel to get the free surplus of food, but the Contactless Food Box Delivery Service delivers the food directly to those in need.
