The university complies with the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board Post-Construction Requirements adopted July 12, 2013 (https://www.waterboards.ca.gov/centralcoast/water_issues/programs/stormwater/docs/lid/hydromod_lid_docs/2013_0032_attach1_post_construction_requirements.pdf) as part of the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. These requirements emphasize the use of green infrastructure and LID practices.

The protection of water quality is mandated by the federal Clean Water Act, the state Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, and other federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and ordinances. UCSC's Storm Water Management Program was developed to comply with the State Water Resources Control Board Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Permit. The UCSC Storm Water Management Program details a wide range of specific activities to:
• educate the campus community on treating stormwater as a resource and how to reduce negative impacts on storm water runoff
• involve the campus public in stormwater protection activities
• prevent discharges other than stormwater
• manage stormwater on construction sites
• design stormwater protections and management into campus development and redevelopment
• protect stormwater quality during campus operations and maintenance activities such as landscape maintenance, building maintenance, food facility operations, and university owned vehicle maintenance and washing.
