Data source(s) and notes about the submission:
These numbers are likely under-reporting. The Office of Community Engagement has a portal that aids students and administrators in tracking community service, but participation is voluntary and many community service hours do not get logged into this system currently (for example, most of the estimated 20,000+ hours of service undertaken by members of the Greek System each year.) The number of students participating in community service counts the following: students who have logged hours in the CCE system; those who receive scholarships requiring service for renewal, members of fraternities and sororities that do service, and students required to do community service/service learning as part of their coursework (for example, 22 hours in the spring semester required form students in the college of Health Science; students in the business school and DAAP. The number of hours counts the required 30 annual hours from the approximately 4500 Cincinatus Scholarship recipients (i.e. 135,000 hours); 67,745 hours from the collective Greek system (see http://www.uc.edu/greeklife/about_us.html), and an additional (very conservative estimate) of 5,000 hours from other students holding scholarships or taking classes that require service hours.
