Does the institution offer at least one immersive, sustainability-focused educational study program that is one week or more in length?:
Yes
A brief description of the sustainability-focused immersive program(s) offered by the institution:
UC has numerous programs that offer students an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in applied sustainability concepts and issues. A few examples are the following:
A study tour course to the Amazon [EVST 3014, On the River] offers students the opportunity to personally experience one of the largest, intact, tropical ecosystems in the world—the Amazon River Basin—and develop a passion for its sustainability. Students begin the semester preparing across disciplines for an immersion trip to the upper Amazon River. During the actual trip, students, instructors, and crew live on a boat that travels over 600 nautical miles along the river-¬‐stopping to explore the flooded forests by canoe, and the upland, villages, and cities, on foot. On return, students report on individual projects and use their journals for reflection.

The College of Engineering and Applied Sciences offers students the opportunity to do a semester abroad or applied co-op work at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences (Switzerland). Their mission is as follows: "Where is our society going? How are professional fields developing – and what will this mean for higher education and for research at universities in ten years’ time? Where do we stand? What developments must we support and push? These were some of the questions that the executive board, lecturers, researchers, other employees, and also students, grappled with in workshops, meetings and discussion groups, with a view to developing a new university strategy. The result is a strategy that has been approved by the Board of the Zurich Universities of Applied Sciences and Arts and that gives plenty of scope for freedom of thought and action. The goal is for the ZHAW to keep moving towards sustainable solutions to societal problems."

The School of Planning offers an immersive faculty-led seminar and study tour entitled Sustainable Urbanism: China "PLAN5199/6099". This seminar course focuses on the concept and practice of urban sustainability from a Chinese perspective. The focus is on how to allow for resilient change in urban communities, while promoting social justice, environmental quality and economic prosperity. Through field study across various disciplines, the course examines the contemporary sustainability issues faced by major cities. Students gain experiential learning in the application of the current theories, models and methods used in engineering, architecture and urban planning to specific, real-world issues of sustainable urbanism as they are currently being addressed in rapidly changing cities in China. It has been suspended due to the global Covid 19 pandemic but will be resumed once conditions permit.
