The number of employees that conduct research includes UC's tenure-track faculty, affiliate, adjunct and emeriti faculty; it excludes 267 "educator" faculty members for whom research is NOT a part of the criteria used to make promotion decisions. By including adjunct faculty, UC is likely over-counting the number of employees that conduct research (since many adjuncts do not, and are not expected to), but we are striving to be conservative in our accounting.
The number of departments that conduct research, reported above, does not match with the numbers reported in PA5. That's because we removed 14 departments in our College of Medicine and one in our James L Winkle College of Pharmacy that are clinically-focused, as well as 5 departments in our College Conservatory of Music and two in our college of Law that are practice-oriented (see the bottom of the "departments" tab of the attached inventory, for a list of these departments. These were excluded for both AC1 and this credit.)
To compile the research inventory, we employed two complementary methods: 1) Querying UC's Sponsored Research Database: Using UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and The Earth Charter, we first identified keywords, terms and phrases relevant to sustainability. We then used those terms and phrases to query the titles and abstracts of the projects in UC's sponsored research databases for the last several years (January 2020 - present), and confirmed (or denied) the link to sustainability for the items that came up as a result of the query by reading the associated documents in the data base for each project. 2) Reviewing individual faculty profiles: Each UC faculty member has a profile page that summarizes their work, including research; we reviewed these pages and included faculty who indicated active research in sustainability topics.
