Be Well UC Ambassadors

A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
In AY19-20, UC Sustainability partnered with UC's employee wellness program, BeWell, to develop a program to integrate sustainability peer-to-peer outreach and education to UC staff and faculty within the BeWell program.
BeWell Wellness Ambassadors are employees across the University that are recruited, trained and supported in disseminating information about resources and programs put on under the umbrella of the BeWell program.
The goal of the partnership was to explicitly include UC Sustainability educational and professional development events focusing on topics like active transportation, waste and energy reduction at UC (and in higher ed more generally), to deepen awareness of sustainability concepts, behaviors and resources.

UC Sustainability’s collaboration with the BeWell program was just getting underway when it had been halted due to Covid-19 pandemic and then a subsequent transition to a new UC Sustainability Coordinator. In spring 2023, UC Sustainability and the BeWell team are working to reengage, to include sustainability peer advocacy/education/outreach to the UC community.

Providing BeWell ambassadors information, training and support from UC's sustainability office through the BeWell program allows them to work independently in their own departments to spread knowledge and motivate their co-workers in their respective departments; this framing of sustainability peer education under the "BeWell" framing is a way to encourage much broader participation and interest from staff and faculty than an explicitly "green office" program would at UC.

The Ambassadors will be trained to share information about the following:
- BearCat Bike Share as a healthy, fun, free transportation option
- The BearCat Pantry as a resource to promote food security
- UC Tobacco Free policy and support services
- Employee health and wellness benefits
- UC's green building and green cleaning policies which help protect indoor air quality and building occupant health
-UC's Community Garden
- Other sustainability topics and resources as availability and interest dictate
