A brief description of the graduation pledge program:
The pledge is voluntary; it allows people to determine for themselves what they consider to be environmentally and socially responsible.
Green cords are worn in recognition of those who have pledged. In addition, a note in the program describes the pledge and explains why students, faculty, and staff are wearing the ribbons.
Participants also sign and keep the small pledge card received when they pick up their green cord prior to commencement to serve as a reminder of their commitment.
The pledge is a serious commitment and CU pledge signers have taken actions such as turning down jobs they did not feel ethically comfortable with (and letting their potential employers know why); promoting environmentally friendly efforts while on the job; and simply staying
informed of the events occurring in the international community.
Volunteers are present prior to and during commencement to hand out green cords and to those graduates who endorse the pledge, as well as green ribbons to supportive faculty members.
The wearing of a cord makes a public statement of intent to consider the well-being of the world and its inhabitants both when considering job possibilities, after employment, and also during one's personal life.
