CU Boulder does not contract for services except through the Athletic Department for very large (stadium) events (10-12 /yr). This is reflected in the percent of square footage calculated above. * also please note that the attached PDF is a compilation of 8 distinct documents that represent the campus-wide green cleaning program. This includes Facilities management (FM), Housing & Dining Services (HDS), and the buildings owned & operated by the student government (CUSG, formerly UCSU).

Water Management and Benchmarking

A brief description of the water management or benchmarking program:
Building Use 1. Meters are used on cooling towers and direct evap. units in an effort to save water, detect leaks, measure efficiency & conservation efforts, and reduce plant investment fees related to sewer. 2. We employ low flow fixtures campus wide for all new construction and renovations. Campus standard is minimum of LEED Gold. The entire UCB Entire campus has been retrofitted. 3. We employ process chilled water for all new construction projects to eliminate ‘once through’ cooling. UCB also employs process cooling, rather than ‘once through’ water for cooling, in all new construction and renovations and has implemented a campus wide effort to retrofit existing once through systems. 4. Where chilled water is not available, water-limiting valves have been installed campus wide to reduce the amount of water dumped to drain. 5. The majority of building level water meters communicate with the campus BAS (Building Automation System) and are read and evaluated regularly. This includes using baseline data prior to renovations / retrofits and as part of regular competitions between buildings, especially in the residence halls. 6. UCB fought to be allowed to pilot a grey water system in one of our more recent residence hall towers, Williams Village North. This took years of conversation and debate in State water court. The system is in operation today, collecting grey water to be treated and re-circulated for use in the building’s toilets. Ditch Water at CU: CU-Boulder uses shares of Anderson Ditch and Smith-Goss Ditch to water 100 percent of the main Boulder campus, and most of the South Research Park and Newton Court. A Toro Network 8000 sprinkler program integrated with a weather station at Franklin Field uses state-of-the-art irrigation controls to apply old-style ditch water in new-style ways; the university is touted by Toro as an exemplar of efficient water use. CU estimates savings of $440,000 a year from using ditch water instead of treated City water. Check out more "CU Ditch Water by the Numbers" here! All 50,000 sprinkler heads in the CU system are controlled by radio from a computer. A weather station at Franklin Field constantly updates the computer, which changes water schedules based on temperature, rainfall, wind speed and relative humidity. The irrigation team closely follows weather forecasts, and adjusts the Toro 8000 system to pre-water in anticipation of heat waves. This raises soil moisture so plants can better withstand heat stress. Using their radios, irrigation technicians routinely 'tone' zones to briefly run areas and visually detect broken heads and other possible leaks. See additional documentation. Student Government (CUSG, formerly UCSU), specifically the student union (UMC), the student Recreation Center, and Wardenburg Health Services began piloting green cleaning in the mid 1990's. In 1999, Facilities Management designed and implemented a green cleaning program for it's in-house custodial staff focused on the use of Green Seal certified products. After many years of testing and perfecting the program, FM is on the verge of passing a formal green cleaning policy. In academic year 2004/2005 Housing & Dining Services conducted a full audit of their cleaning products used by both dining and housekeeping staff. The work was conducted by students in the Baker Hall Residential Academic Program (RAP) under the instruction of professor Lisa Barlow. This work of the ENVS 3001 class led to product trials in 2006 throughout the Williams Village residential complex and subsequently to the adoption of a department-wide green cleaning program in 2007. In 2006, CUSG formalized its program by passing legislation requiring the use of green cleaning products in all student fee funded buildings and programs.
