Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Machine Shop Prototype 3D Printer Filament Recycler - Green Action Fund Project
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
In June 2016, the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering department obtained a 3D printer filament recycler through a Green Action Fund proposal. Students were part of the proposal, program design, implementation and execution of the program. All 3D printed projects that are not kept (including the excess material) are ground, melted, and reused. The machine shop also has a foundry where the metal is melted and molded for reuse. Not only does this program help reduce costs of purchasing new filament and metals, but it also provides the students with knowledge they can promote to future employers to help save on their budgets. Students utilizing these resources in their course settings see the value of reuse, which provides them more opportunity to try new things, make mistakes, and still be able to utilize the same material.
