The green building guidelines or policies:
This project was the Alpine Garage and Field for which there was no LEED certification system available. Green building guidelines, including LEED were used and results included LED lights, occupancy and daylight sensors, night sky lighting accommodations, a 40kW photovoltaic system and the innovative use of land of putting a playing field on top of a parking garage to save development of land.
Do the green building guidelines or policies cover the following?:
Yes or No | |
Impacts on the surrounding site (e.g. guidelines to reuse previously developed land, protect environmentally sensitive areas, and otherwise minimize site impacts) | Yes |
Energy consumption (e.g. policies requiring a minimum level of energy efficiency for buildings and their systems) | Yes |
Building-level energy metering | Yes |
Use of environmentally preferable materials (e.g. guidelines to minimize the life cycle impacts associated with building materials) | Yes |
Indoor environmental quality (i.e. guidelines to protect the health and comfort of building occupants) | Yes |
Water consumption (e.g. requiring minimum standards of efficiency for indoor and outdoor water use) | Yes |
Building-level water metering | Yes |
A brief description of the green building guidelines or policies and/or a list or sample of buildings covered:
Colorado Senate Bill 51-07 - All buildings that receive 25% or more of state funding shall pursue LEED Gold Certification. Since 2007 the campus has extended that goal to all new buildings and major renovations even if there is no state funding, as long as there is a LEED certification available for the type of building.

A brief description of how the institution ensures compliance with green building design and construction guidelines and policies:
Our objective is a sustainable infrastructure with buildings that exemplify best practices with regard to sustainable development: materials, energy and water conservation, and occupant health, safety, and well-being. As well, our objective is to provide a sustainability living laboratory -- a learning experience above and beyond the classroom. LEED Gold is assumed at the beginning of projects. The Sustainability Strategic Plan advocates for LEED Plus, with goals of 40% energy and water savings over baseline buildings.
More of the building projects on campus are utilizing a design build model which allow for better integration of design, construction, and performance.
There is a fiscal line item for state buildings that is designated for high performance buildings.
