1st campaign

Name of the campaign:
Positive Impact Points (PIPs):

A brief description of the campaign:
The PIPs Program is a mobile app which rewards students, faculty and staff for actions they take that have a positive outcome for the environment, their health, or the community with PIPs, Positive Impact Points. PIPs are awarded through QR code scans. Students who download the app and log in using their UCCS login can earn Positive Impact Points (PIPs) for actions that benefit personal wellness, the environment and community good. Using the PIPs for School feature on the app, students can then turn the PIPs they earn into a scholarship to pay toward their tuition and fees.

A brief description of the measured positive impact(s) of the campaign:
UCCS saw 920 students join the PIPs for School (P4S) program in September 2019. By the program’s end, in July 2022, there were 2,865 student users. After removing all students who had graduated or had not enrolled from the roster each fall, the program added an average of 648 new student users each year. UCCS PIPs users took an average of 83,000 sustainable actions a year, with the three most popular actions in 2021-22 being refilling water bottles, recycling on campus, and taking a tour of the UCCS Sustainability Demonstration House. Over the three-year program, 121 grants totaling $41,767 were awarded to P4S student users. As of June 2022, student users had reduced 161,476 lbs of carbon. Driving decreased by 13% among PIPs users, there was an increase in reusables, and student users exercised more regularly. The PIPs program was discontinued in the Fall of 2022 due to funding constraints and a lack of data on users practicing new sustainable behaviors.

The CU President’s Office invites students to present their ideas for sustainable innovations and solutions in competition for a cash prize. The CU President’s Sustainable Solutions Challenge (PSSC) is a competition series that seeks to encourage student-led innovation in sustainability at UCCS or throughout the entire CU System.

For the competition, students (as individuals or teams) are invited to develop short-pitch presentations that propose sustainability solutions that provide long-term financial, social, and environmental benefits at UCCS or throughout the CU System. Qualifying teams presented their ideas to a panel of judges and were evaluated on how well they understand the problem, develop a sustainable solution, and discuss the impact and feasibility of the idea.
