A brief description of the institution’s programs that help increase the diversity of higher education faculty :
•The annual Summer Institute addresses the underrepresentation of faculty of color and women in academia, and consists of several days of seminars focusing on strategies for completing the dissertation; preparing a curriculum vita and cover letter; negotiating faculty contracts; publishing; balancing research, teaching and community service; understanding the tenure process; preparing a job talk; seeking and valuing mentoring and networking; the politics of obtaining tenure; and overcoming various employment obstacles and challenges. National experts have presented on the various topics providing participants with practical, current and cutting edge information, and insight into the process of entering the academy. •The CME Office of Multicultural Faculty Recruitment and Retention also offers: •Faculty Research Grants assist departments with offer packages to prospective hires and to support Ast Professors with new and/or on-going research—all toward enhancing the diversity of the incoming and tenured faculty; and •Generating Excellence through Mentoring (GEM), a structured mentoring program designed to support the success of DU’s outstanding and talented pre-tenure faculty of color and women.
