Local advocacy

Does the institution advocate for public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability at the municipal/local level?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
In 2021, University of Denver joined with other Universities in the region (CSU, CU Boulder, CU Anschutz, UC Denver, Naropa) to advocate for an Employee Trip Reduction Program rule under consideration by the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment. This rule aligns with commuting efforts in place at Colorado Universities for the last 10+ years. The goal of the rule is to reduce single occupancy vehicle commute trips to address mobile source pollution and reduce ground level ozone and GHG emissions. With support from the University of Denver Environmental Law Clinic, the coalition achieved party status and submitted a pre-hearing statement to the Air Quality Control Commission in support of the rule.

Student attorneys in clinic have the opportunity to provide representation to national, regional, local, and tribal environmental advocacy organizations. The clinic's hands-on approach to representation of clients, combined with individualized supervision and instruction, trains students to be the next generation of environmental lawyers and advocates. In addition to developing the strong advocacy skills necessary to succeed as a lawyer, students also learn to identify and pursue policy issues that will shape the future of environmental protection.
